Master of Alchemy The ghosts of Christmas past, and of England past. Musically, the album evokes a pagan, rural, bygone England, and is similar in style to The Hare and the Moon, while lyrically rooted in Christian themes - a hauntological antinomy of breathtaking beauty, one that can be traced right back to the Christianisation of our Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, an admixture evident within the poem Beowulf.

Little Town and Bleak Midwinter, being so familiar, feel out of keeping here, even kitsch. Favorite track: The Leaves Of Life.

Ed Martin I hate Christmas music so it's all the more impressive that Sproatly Smith delivered an atmospheric masterpiece. Favorite track: Candlemas Carol.
